History: This blog is the third incarnation, and started as a paper RPG & desktop gaming blog.  After starting the MMO City of Heroes days after its launch in 2004,  It developed into one dedicated to that MMO, as it remained for nearly eight years. On November 30, 2012 that MMO was shut down by the company NCSoft despite an outpouring of fan support and community outrage.  Starting In December 2012, I'm going to be opening up the focus of the blog to cover ANYTHING gaming I'm playing, be it PC, XBox 360, iPad, Dragon*Con, etc.

That being said, their will be images from various games posted on this blog.  No claim here is made to the games, and no intent to infringe on any copyrights are inferred.   Copyrights are property of the respective companies.

The Secret World -- First thoughts

Now trying the MMO The Secret World.   Apparently it has just been shifted to Free-To-Play, and though it is still $59 in the stores, I was able to get it from FUNCOM directly online for only $30.  It was a 15.1 gb download -- and the new PC had some sleep settings that blocked overnight download.   But I was able to get it up and running.

I had played a short demo on this before, but that was gameplay several minutes into the game as I now see.    It is somewhat unusual to me coming from the MMOs I have played.     Its clear the this MMO is trying to tell a story , and does that through voiced cut scenes.   The one issue I have with its execution is that there can and usually are several player characters in the area when you go up to some contact that initiates such a cut scene.  But the cut scene itself only shows you and whatever NPCs are involved.  So you might be in an office with 7 people, then 1, then 7 again.   It does play with your head.

The game itself also plays with your head by its very nature.   You suddenly get introduced to magical abilities, get recruited by one of 3 groups, each with their own structure and protocol, and then get sent into an event basically seconds after training.

Visuals are wild and mind blowing -- including dream sequences,  out of body experiences, a warp filled dimension that allows easy transit world wide, and a zombie invasion.   My new system had no problem with things set to ULTRA .

I barely got in more than a couple hours in the game, but so far I find I could get into it.   At least it is the right price for me at

Thanks for that info. Really want to play Secret World and just was wondering from a CoH fan how it seamed. Happy Holidays.
